The G40T120 (often manufactured by Infineon as IHW40N120R3 or equivalent premium brands) is a high-performance Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) featuring Trench Gate and Field Stop technology. Combining the simple, high-impedance gate drive of a MOSFET with the low conduction loss of a bipolar transistor, this discrete power switch is built to survive brutal voltage transients up to 1200V and continuously carry 40A of current. It is the most commonly replaced power silicon in industrial welding machines, commercial induction heaters, and solar inverters.
Trench Field Stop Technology: Offers an exceptionally low saturation voltage which significantly reduces thermal losses under heavy switching loads.
Integrated Fast Recovery Diode: Features a built-in co-packaged parallel anti-diode with low reverse-recovery charge, protecting the switch from destructive inductive kickbacks.
Excellent Thermal Dissipation: Housed in the large TO-247 package which provides a massive metal backing area for optimal heat transfer to external heatsinks.
High Input Ruggedness: Features a tight parameter distribution and strong short-circuit ruggedness, letting it handle unexpected load fluctuations easily.

When looking at the front of the chip (with the printed text facing you and the pins pointing down), the pin arrangement from left to right is:
Gate (G): Controls the turning on and off of the IGBT ($V_{GE}$ signal input).
Collector (C): High-voltage input (connected to the center pin and physically tied to the rear metal mounting tab).
Emitter (E): Current exit pin (ground or negative rail reference).
