A buck converter (also known as a step-down converter) is a DC-to-DC power converter that lowers the voltage from its input (supply) to its output while consuming less average current (load). It is a type of switched-mode power supply (SMPS) that frequently includes at least two semiconductors and one energy storage component, such as a capacitor, inductor, or both. Such a converter’s output and input typically have capacitor-based filters added to eliminate voltage ripple. Because the voltage across the inductor “bucks” or opposes the supply voltage, it is known as a buck converter.
